Scriptural Texts for Sunday, 7/28/07

From the sermon "Eighteen Inches from Heaven or Hell"

The story from Luke 16:19-31 – Lazarus and the Rich Man

References to Hell being cast into the Lake of Fire as the 'Second Death':

A description of Judgement Day: "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:14,15.

"Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power." Revelation 20:6

"He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death." Revelation 2:11

Reference to God's hope that a sinner will repent: "As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?" Ezekiel 33:11

Reference to God aiding the Saint to overcome temptation: "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgement to be punished." 2 Peter 2:9.

Reference to Christ being the 'straight gate': "Enter ye in at the straight gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat." Matthew 7:13

Also cited, but not quoted, 2 Corinthians 5:8 - "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
